Women in Sport Update-July

At the end of last month, the Female Sports Forum hosted a Try Sport Day at LORAG. Participants enjoyed activities such as table tennis, netball, and some basketball drills. We’ve been hearing that many women want to become active again but don’t know where to start! Although we didn’t have the largest turnout, those who attended were excited to get active and re-engage with social sports. What people are looking for is casual and easily accessible sports! The Female Sports Forum is excited to continue promoting sports and physical activity at every level.

Before we dive into our coverage of the Olympics, let’s highlight other sporting events from this month. Armagh’s Men’s team won the All-Ireland final in a historic season, while the women’s team reached the semi-final before losing to Kerry. Blaithín Mackin had an outstanding season, receiving multiple highlights. At the beginning of August, the Ladies Gaelic All-Ireland Final will take place at Croke Park. Fermanagh will play Louth at the junior level after defeating Limerick, and Tyrone will face Leitrim at the intermediate level, having beaten Down in the semi-final. It has been a successful year for Ulster women in Ladies Gaelic. Find out how to get your tickets for Croke Park HERE!

With the All-Ireland season finals upon us, we also look forward to Camogie. While no Ulster team made it to the senior final, we have the U16 B final in August featuring Carlow vs. Down.

In other team sports updates, the Northern Irish women beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in Belfast to advance to the next stage of the UEFA Women’s Euros 2025. They will face Croatia as part of Path Two. If they win against Croatia, they will compete in a two-legged tie between November 27 and December 3. It’s exciting to see these women finding their stride under Head Coach Tanya Oxtoby. The U16 team played in the SuperCup NI Premier Section and made it to the final, narrowly losing to Manchester United. The continued strength of the younger girls is a testament to the effective pathway work of the IFA.

The event of the summer, the OLYMPICS, has started with a strong team of 41 Northern Irish athletes competing for both Team Ireland and Team GB, including 18 women. To learn more about the athletes, check out our POSTCARDS FROM PARIS and follow Team Ireland/Team GB on social media to watch our athletes make history!

This month has also seen great research with new data on women sports fans. Additionally, the Northern Ireland Sports Forum has partnered with QUB Management to explore how sports participation can contribute to skills useful in the workforce. Please fill out the survey linked above in the update to participate.
