Women in Sport-December Update

With end of the year quickly approaching it feels like the perfect time to squeeze one last up date for the year! With such a full on year keep a look out for out 2024 wrap up out later this year, we might even try to be like Spotify an do a fun graphic!

Rachel Reid earlier this month found about that she had been nominated for the BBC Unsung Hero Award. Rachel is the captain of the Lagan Dragons- a club that was created in 2015 for those who have been impacted by breast cancer. Rachel was described as touching everyone’s live in the club. The RTE sports personality of the year had a few northern Irish faces nominated for the award. Rhys McClenaghan, Daniel Wiffen were nominated for their outstand year along with Ciara Mageean for some of her exceptional races. Ciara was also was honoured at the PWC Camogie All-Star awards as the guest of honour- Ciara has talked about how both athletics and camogie has meant so much to her.

December brings swimming excellence back to the forefront as the World Aquatics Championship produces some fantastic swimming. Lottie Cullen (Swim Belfast) finished 13th in the 200m Breaststroke in her debut at the world championships.  Her time makes her number two in the fastest ever list for the event! Danielle Hill swam the 50m Freestyle finishing 18th, 13th in the 50m Backstroke, 26th in the 100m Freestyle.

The Irish Winter Championship also happened with strong swims from Grace Davison in the 100m and 200m Breaststroke. This meet brings some new faces to the on the scene with Skye Austin-Burrows (Larne) in the 1500m/800m, Emma Coulter (Ards) in 50m Butterfly, Mollie McAlorun (National Centre Ulster)  in 200m Breaststroke, and Alana Burns- Atkin (National Centre Ulster) in 50m/200m Fly. Glad to see more and more faces coming into the scene from Northern Ireland.

At the end of November, 15 year old Banbridge boxer Paige Nickels make history for being the first girl from Northern Ireland to win a National UK Boy and Girls Club Championship! Paige’s club talked about her being an inspirations with a increase in girls at the club over the last five years! Congratulations Paige can’t wait to see where you go in the sport next!

The Irish Women’s Cricket Team has been busy with tournaments as the Ireland Women completed an historic 3-0 clean sweep with a dramatic penultimate ball victory over Bangladesh in the third T20I of the three-match series today. The squad for the 2025 Under-19s Women’s World Cup has been picked with Amy Hunter  (Instonians/Malahide), Abbi Harrison (Warrington), Jenni Jackson (Eglinton), Kia McCartney (Coleraine), Lucy Neely (Fox Lodge), Millie Spence (Bready). Amy Hunter will captain the team for the Tournament which takes place from 13th Jan to 2nd Feb. Congratulations and Good luck to both these teams. ( More about the team)

The AIB All-Ireland Club Camogie Championship Final finished this weekend with some intense games. Granemore (Armagh) put up a strong game against up and coming team of Knockananna (Wicklow) in a 0-12 to 3-11 in the Junior A final. It was a strong game and hopefully Granemore will keep up with their strong performances and regain the title next season. The AIB All-Ireland Junior B final was a first as it was the first time of a Scottish team have been in a club Final. The Armagh team did prevail as the won with a 2-3 to 0-4. Her Sport did a wonderful round up of all the games for both camogie and LGFA

Big things are coming for the Female Sports Forum in the New Year as there are going to be big things for the Sporting World as well. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
