A research study is being conducted by UU to understand how menstruation and menstrual pain affects participation in non-elite sports for young women. Aim:
To understand how menstruation and menstrual pain affects participation in non-elite sports for young women.
Objectives:
- Explore the views of governing bodies on what they offer in terms of support around managing menstruation and wellbeing of their players
- Assess any training coaches have undertaken in relation to the menstrual cycle
- Measure coaches’ levels of confidence and knowledge about the menstrual cycle
- Identify if pain levels vary across the menstrual cycle in non-elite sports women
- Assess if PA levels change across the course of the menstrual cycle in non-elite sports women
- Identify if women experience psychological distress associated with menstruation
- Find if levels of wellbeing change across the course of the menstrual cycle

Coaches
The inclusion criteria for this survey are: any sports coach, coaching women or girls at a non-elite level, living in UK or Ireland and 18 or over.

Young Women
The inclusion criteria for this survey are: female, aged 18-25, have regular periods with a menstrual cycle ranging in length from 25 to 32 days in length, participate in sport at least once a week and live in UK or Ireland.
